Rio Grande National Forest

The beautiful Rio Grande National Forest is on 1.83 million acres in the southcentral portion of Colorado. One of the gems of the forest is the Rio Grande River that makes its trip from the Gulf of Mexico to the western part of the forest. The forest is elevation about 7600 feet about sea level and is comprised of several beautiful rocky areas.

During the spring, the mountains in the forest are covered with a thick blanket of snow. As summer rolls around the high elevations may still hold snowfields however you will also see.wildflowers as well. During temperatures that are 70 and above monsoons develop and bring thunderstorms. As summer turns to autumn the aspen trees begin to turn golden then the temperature begins to chill and fall turns to winter. The San Juan Mountains are popular because of their deep snow that averages 460 inches a year.
The Rio Grande offers plenty of great activities while in the solitude of the mountains. Enjoy bicycling the many trails. Go climbing at one of more than 300 sport climbing routes. Fishing comes in different formats at different times a year, go ice fishing, lake/pond fishing, or fishing in the river. There are lots of trails to go hiking and backpacking on as well as gorgeous nature viewing areas, and picnic areas. For those of you that don't want to do a lot of walking make sure that you take a drive through the scenic areas. There are also plenty of water activities and winter sports during their respective seasons of summer and winter.

Guests can easily spend a full day taking in the beauty that is the Rio Grande National Forest. Check out the unmarred area and spend the day reconnecting with nature. There is so much to see with so little time.
